Passage from the text - working at a dispensary in Vietnam...

I am still digging a plasma red earth at the bottom of a trench.

In the blink of an eye, a violent explosion sends me out of my hole.
Guided by a light aircraft, two American aerial fighters take turns to plunge
upon their targets with baffling speed and precision before swooshing back up.
In a distance, black smoke is soaring while the comings and goings continue in a dizzying swirl of fuselage sparkling in the sun, slashing the space with long white gashes.

Within a few minutes the attack is over.
